2018 Nissan Rogue P0456: a loose cap or a real EVAP leak?

A cap warning is useful evidence; it is not a failed-part diagnosis.

What the owner can check

For the 2018 Rogue, Nissan specifies inserting the cap straight and turning it clockwise until one click. After reseating it, the Loose Fuel Cap message can be dismissed with the steering-wheel OK button held for about a second. Do this while stopped.

The manual distinguishes that message from the malfunction lamp. A lamp caused by a loose or missing cap may take a few trips to extinguish. If it remains, arrange inspection. A blinking lamp is a different condition associated with misfire; do not treat it as a cap reminder.

What separates the two repair branches

For stored P0442, P0455 or P0456, NTB13-097I calls for a controlled EVAP leak test. The technician secures the cap, closes the vent through CONSULT and monitors test pressure for ten minutes.

Why the test connection matters

The bulletin distinguishes systems with a service port from those without one. On its 2018-and-newer no-port arrangement, the purge valve needs a separate leak check. A test that excludes that valve cannot, by itself, clear it. The bulletin does not use a test drive to confirm these leak codes.

Before buying a cap, valve or canister

Ask which component leaked and how the shop located it. If the only finding is that the original cap was loose, ask why a replacement is proposed. If the cap was already secure, ask for the leak-test result rather than accepting a guess based on the code number.

Keep a note of the last refueling and whether the cap message appeared first. That chronology helps explain the complaint without assigning a cause. Repeatedly dismissing the message is not a substitute for resolving a returning fault.

Keep this example tied to the vehicle

These owner controls are specific to the cited Rogue manual. Other Nissan models can use different displays and fuel-filler arrangements. Pressurizing fuel-vapor plumbing and commanding valves belong to a trained workshop using the applicable equipment and procedure.
