Ford Escape/Fusion P1450 after refueling: match the purge-valve case
The timing of the starting problem matters as much as the code.
Check the vehicle first.

The documented pattern
Ford describes difficult starting, failure to start or falling engine speed after refueling, sometimes with P1450/P0456. For the applicable vehicle and complaint, 16-0075 specifies canister-purge-valve replacement through the workshop procedure.
A capless-inlet warning is a different observation
The 2013 Escape manual separately describes a warning caused by an inlet that has not closed. With the vehicle parked and off, its guidance checks visible debris and uses the supplied fuel funnel or nozzle to help the inlet reseal. It prohibits overfilling. The warning can take several driving cycles to disappear.
Did the vehicle actually run out of fuel?
Ford’s separate running-out-of-fuel guidance says restarting can take longer after refilling an empty tank. It also warns against prying the capless mechanism or using foreign objects/unsuitable funnels. That history should be reported, not silently equated with the bulletin’s purge fault.
Use the history to choose the next conversation
| What you observed | Editorial question for service |
|---|---|
| Repeated start trouble immediately after ordinary refueling | Ask whether the exact build/engine and complaint meet 16-0075. |
| Inlet warning without the starting pattern | Discuss inlet closure and the scan findings separately. |
| Later build, different engine or persistent fault after repair | Request the current vehicle-specific diagnosis; this case does not settle it. |
Bring a sequence, not a guessed part
Record whether the engine started normally before fueling, whether the tank was empty, what happened immediately afterward and the exact scan codes. Tell the shop whether the problem recurred after a previous purge repair. Do not disconnect vapor lines or use repeated stalls as a test. Ask how the repair will be checked against the original starting complaint.
