Audi A3/A4 P2187, P2279 or P1297: match the PCV hardware first

A repeat repair deserves an explanation of what differs from the previous repair.

Displays covered: P2187 · P2279 · P1297 Reviewed

Check the vehicle first.

Vehicles
2005–2008 A4 BPG/BWT; 2006–2008 A3 BPY; VIN-limited.
Applicability
Match the complete VIN to the table in 2015505/10.

What the codes and symptoms have in common

Audi links these faults to crankcase pressure-control or turbo-intake-pipe problems. Excess pressure can cause oil leakage; excessive vacuum can whistle and hold an unlocked filler cap firmly. Neither observation alone confirms a failed part.

The installed hardware changes the repair

Workshop findingDocumented direction
Improved valve and pipe already fittedUse guided fault finding; replace only the failed component.
Old components fittedMatch the updated valve/pipe combination to the VIN.
Replacement valve has one check valveA compatible check-valve turbo pipe is required.
Replacement valve has two check valvesThe bulletin does not require that additional pipe.

An update record is useful evidence

The separate March 2012 Audi notice identifies 17D9, 24T4 and 24T3 as updates, with applicability checked in the dealer campaign/action system. They concern different components: pressure control, fuel-pressure sensing and intake-manifold runner control. Audi did not describe them as recalls or promise individual owner notification.

Therefore, an owner who received no letter cannot infer that every relevant update was completed. Ask service to retrieve the VIN-specific record and identify which update applied. Do not treat all three campaign numbers as instructions to replace three parts.

If the same fault returns after a PCV repair

Use the earlier invoice as a comparison document. Request the installed part numbers, the reason the workshop selected them, and the evidence supporting today’s recommendation. A proposal that simply repeats the old invoice leaves an unanswered question: what failed or remained unresolved?

These are questions for evaluating the diagnosis, not additional Audi test requirements. Leave running-engine checks and component removal to a technician. This guide does not provide a universal crankcase-pressure specification or a parts-shopping list.
